We Built a House out of Water

Blak Dot Gallery
Saturday 6 JuneSunday 5 July

We Built a House Out of Water is a body of work that draws on memory, family, and culture – while understanding healing as an ongoing process. This exhibition uses water as both a material and a metaphor to create various works of layered meaning. Exploring catharsis and expression through photography, stop-motion animation and alternative printing techniques. The artist creates an expressive, intimate space that mirrors an internal landscape.

Emerging from the emotional impacts of her personal experiences of domestic and family violence. This exhibition is the artists approach to overcoming through childhood reminiscence, where play became a tool for processing, empowerment and belonging. For her family, religion and faith offered a space of safety, support and forgiveness. However, the artist questions these imposed systems of belief as tools for restoration.

Developed at the intersection of religion and culture, We Built a House Out of Water addresses the conflicting relationship of two complex belief systems and how they both simultaneously impact the identity of the artist, her family and wider community in the Torres Straits. This coexistence carries tension, and rightly so. This body of work acknowledges that religion was and is a colonial tool; however, recognising this intersection does not flatten the devastating history of its imposition or the continuing impacts of colonial power. Rather, the artists’ intent is to put into perspective the blending of these systems of belief and how they have been adopted in the Torres Strait to create a layered spiritual reality shaped by history, resilience, and agency - and how this in turn, has shaped the artist and her family’s processes of healing.

Overall, We Built a House Out of Water is a space of safety and contemplation. Calling into question the inherited and indoctrinated beliefs. This body of work invites viewers to reflect and contemplate what forces (both seen and unseen) help us endure.
