Caesar Florence-Howard

Recent Work

Sutton Gallery
Saturday 27 JuneSaturday 25 July

Sutton Gallery is pleased to present Recent Work, an exhibition by Melbourne-based painter Caesar Florence-Howard. Following his solo presentation at Sutton Projects in 2023, Recent work marks a continuation of Florence-Howard’s rigorous and embodied material approach.

The permeation of the studio is a hallmark of Florence-Howard’s practice. Aggregate from this environment bleeds into the work, as layers of pastel, chalk, sand, glue and acrylic are applied and removed through improvisatory processes like rubbing, tracing, peeling and erasing. For the artist, accumulation performs the function of erasure; layering obfuscates and rehashes the surface until multiple states are withheld concurrently. Through these condensing processes Florence-Howard negotiates the physical presence and formative structure of the stretched canvas, on which impulsive gestures, anatomical excavations, and fastidious mark making are contained.
