George Johnson: Centenary Exhibition

This exhibition marks the centenary of the birth of George Johnson (1926 – 2021).

In 2006 the gallery presented an exhibition of George’s work to celebrate not only the publication of his monograph (World View, written by Christopher Heathcote, Jenny Zimmer, and others, published by MacMillan Art) and the 50th anniversary of the artist’s first solo exhibition in Melbourne (at the Tasmanian Tourist Bureau Gallery, Melbourne, in 1956) but the artist’s 80th birthday – so the unofficial title for that show became 80 and 50.

The title for George Johnson’s 2016 exhibition was 90 70 30: 90 years on earth; 70 years in the studio; 30 years with this gallery.

He was still with us then, at 90 years of age, and, in hindsight, only just out of the studio, his final paintings dating from 2012-2014. So the only way we could continue the tradition for this new exhibition would be to mark 40 years with this gallery – George Johnson: Survey Exhibition 1952-1985 opening here in June 1986. We’d like to take this opportunity to especially thank Paula Johnson and Jenny Zimmer for their dedication to George Johnson’s legacy and invite all the gallery’s clients and supporters to join us in our continued efforts to grow and strengthen it.
