Golden Lands

Brunswick Street Gallery
Thursday 16 AprilSunday 3 May

Golden Lands is a new body of work inspired by recent travels through Morocco, moving between the vibrant streets of Marrakech, the vast landscapes of the Atlas Mountains, and the Atlantic coastline. Across each of these environments, light became a defining presence. At sunrise and sunset in particular, the land appears to ignite with a deep golden glow; the hue of the medina walls, sandy mountain passes and coastal towns all reflecting the warmth of the sun.

This atmosphere of light brings about the palette of the collection. Sun-bleached ochres, warm sands and burnished golds are drawn directly from Morocco’s architecture and terrain, from the clay walls of the medina to the shifting tones of the mountains and coast. The changing light transforms these places throughout the day, casting familiar streets and landscapes in constantly evolving colour.

For the first time in years within Adrianne’s practice, people emerge as central figures within the paintings. While earlier works focused primarily on landscape and graphic travel elements, this journey revealed how deeply the identity of these places is shaped by the rhythm of everyday life. Market vendors, passers-by and men in a barbershop scene appear throughout the works, quietly inhabiting the scenes around them.

Rather than functioning as portraits, the figures are woven into the broader visual language of the landscape, some of which still obtain a graphic visual language. Their presence introduces movement and narrative, grounding the work in the lived experience of each place.

In Golden Lands, warmth, local surroundings, language and human presence all come together. The sun, casting its warm glow across streets, mountains and coastline, unifies these environments. Leaving a glimmer of gold everywhere the sun touches.
