Setareh Hosseini

I Take My City

Counihan Gallery
Saturday 4 FebruarySunday 26 March

Years ago, the Iranian pop singer Farhad sang: ‘I wish humans could take their homeland with them wherever they wanted, like violets.’

In this solo exhibition by Setareh Hosseini, the artist builds a city that can sit in the palm of a hand. It is a city that can be taken anywhere and everywhere. The miniature city can be the object of longing, reflection and sometimes dismay. ‘I Take My City’ is based on the artist’s nostalgia for Tehran.

Hosseini creates palm-sized images of her city as a visual metaphor. She says: “The city in which people have lived since childhood creates a deep emotional burden for them. As if the city becomes the body of people. Those who think about leaving face the question: What can they do with the things they feel attached to?”

This exhibition is presented in association with International Women’s Day.
