Paintings from the Sand Dune Country

APY Gallery
Sunday 1 DecemberMonday 1 December

The country around Kaltjiti is dotted with sites of significance to many of the artists that call sand dune country home. Some of

these sites are their birth sites, or their parents’ or grandparents’, country on which songlines connect them to the major Tjukuṟpa of Kungkarangkalpa, the

Seven Sisters.

This vast sand dune country travels in all directions, as do the songlines connecting them to country and their relatives to the north, south, east and west – the countries of Kuli, Irintata, Tjuntjun, Mulga Bore

and beyond.

The selected works in this exhibition are no way intended to fully represent the breadth and depth of painting currently being produced in Kaltjiti at present. But we do hope to evoke a glimpse of the country so familiar to the artists and illustrate the diversity of painterly approaches currently being expressed by both our elder painters and our younger painters alike.

Sand dune country is a living, culturally rich landscape equally beautiful with its seasonal changes of colour, tones and spectacle. The language of gestures, marks and stories are continually being reinterpretated across the generations of Kaltjiti artist ; this ensures our practice enriches the past whilst talking to the future.
