A call and response traditionally refers to choral music in which a line is sung, and a reply is made. This interaction might also be considered a collaboration – the second voice amplifying and contextualising the first. Listening to only one part of the song, or viewing one-half of the painting, while possibly pleasurable, might miss the frisson of the interaction, leaving the listener/viewer bereft of completion. Michael Mark and David Wallage seek to test this hypothesis.
