Yang Jianyong

MOUNTAIN, UNSEEN

Vermilion Art
Thursday 15 JanuarySaturday 7 February

In Yang Jianyong’s recent work, the “mountain” is no longer approached as a physical topography but as a cognitive and affective landscape. Rendered through translucent washes of pigment, cold forests and recessed ravines emerge with a weightlessness that disengages the mountain from its terrestrial mass. What circulates instead is a residual breath—an atmospheric presence that moves between pine trunks and lingers in the interstices of the composition. When the boundaries of form are deliberately loosened, what remains is a subtle reverberation, an echo that quietly requests the viewer’s attention. Here, emptiness does not signify negation. Rather, it opens a generative field of potentiality—a mediating state suspended between manifestation and latency, akin to the primordial breath that precedes the naming of things. Within Yang’s visual logic, the “Empty Mountain” is not the absence of nature but an epistemic threshold: a point of entry into perceiving the mountain’s inner disposition, its shifting spirit (山之性).The aqueous traces that wash across the surface do not mute the image; they recalibrate our perceptual relation to the world. In this sense, Yang’s practice participates in a broader contemporary inquiry into how landscape may function as a site for reorientation—where traditional ink sensibilities intersect with postmodern abstraction and phenomenological experience.
