DREAMcreamcreakcrackcrockCLOCK

Sutton Gallery
Saturday 8 NovemberSaturday 6 December

Sutton Gallery is pleased to present DREAMcreamcreakcrackcrockCLOCK, a two-person exhibition by artists Matlok Griffiths and Dan Moynihan. The title was formed through a sequential adjustment of letters, each transformation shifting meaning until the word Dream progresses into Clock. That form of linguistic play provided the conceptual framework for this artistic exchange.

Working between separate studios, Griffiths and Moynihan established a constraint-based exchange, in which word prompts were translated from one another into colours, filtering language through their individual sensibilities and informing the colour palette for each artwork. This process foregrounds a friction between communication and miscommunication, revealing how subjective experience and material intuition influences one’s understanding of colour. The resulting works present each artist’s distinct approach to surface, form and texture, intrinsic in the acts of seeing, interpreting and making.

DREAMcreamcreakcrackcrockCLOCK becomes both an experiment in correspondence and a meditation on the interplay and slippages between language, observations, and the painted surface. The result is a harmonious clash of perceptions presented on each artist’s unique support for painting.
