Dan Withey

The Winds of Strange

Fox Galleries
Thursday 17 AprilSunday 11 May

Dan Withey, based in Tarntanya-Adelaide, South Australia, is a contemporary artist who has carved out a unique space in the Australian art scene by blending elements of fine art with pop culture in a way that defies easy categorisation.

After relocating to Australia from Birmingham (UK) in 2004, Withey earned a Bachelor of Visual Communication, majoring in Illustration, at the University of South Australia. This illustrative background is a key component of his oeuvre, evident in his crisp line work, vibrant colour schemes, and sharply defined shapes.

This exhibition remains deep-rooted in the vibrant, peculiar world poured out from the inner workings of Dan Withey’s imagination. The growing concern surrounding AI and the newfound effect it has on our everyday lives is the underlying theme tying each artwork together.

Although deeply concerned with current sociocultural issues, Withey’s works remain playful. Each figure is rich with their own characteristics, reinforced by the humourous titles. Withey’s persistent use of colour and opposing composition never fails to keep the viewer engaged. Withey provides an amusing yet thought provoking reflection of the current state of modern society.
