Catherine Opie

Binding Ties

Heide Museum of Modern Art
Friday 31 MarchSunday 9 July

Since the 1990s, Catherine Opie’s photographs have challenged and illuminated our understanding of notions of personal and political affiliation. Opie has in this time firmly established an international reputation as one of the leading photographers of her generation. In 1994, Heide exhibited eighteen of Opie’s portraits in the exhibition Persona Cognita, curated by Juliana Engberg. That exhibition represented Opie’s first showing in Australia, and now almost three decades later Catherine Opie: Binding Ties is the first survey of the artist’s work in this part of the world. As such, it offers something of a return and an opportunity to reconsider Opie’s remarkable body of work from a new perspective.
